SSA 2017 Summer Youth Internship Program

The Alameda County Social Services Agency (SSA) is currently inviting applications for a limited number of paid summer youth internship positions in several of its departments. Interns will experience firsthand what it’s like to work in a fast-paced public assistance agency and play a valuable role in supporting our mission of serving local communities in need. This is an excellent opportunity for students who are looking to explore career options, develop their skills, and grow professionally. 

Internships will run from Monday, June 19 through Friday, August 11, 2017.

Application Process

Criteria for candidates:

  • Must be entering their senior year of high school or enrolled in a community college or undergraduate program for the 2017-2018 school year;
  • Have at least 6 months of paid or unpaid experience related to the position(s) for which they are applying; AND
  • Available for the duration of the 8-week program (with limited exceptions).

Applications will be reviewed by the SSA Office of Public Affairs. Based on the quality of the written application and information provided regarding relevant skills and experience, the most qualified candidates will be invited for an interview. Interviews will tentatively take place between April 13-28. Students attending school more than 50 miles away from Oakland will be given the option of a phone / virtual interview.

To complete the hiring process, selected interns will be asked to:

  • Provide a photo ID and Social Security card;
  • Undergo a LiveScan fingerprint background check (this will be free of charge; to the intern but must be completed at the designated office location);
  • Complete additional personnel and medical paperwork; AND
  • Submit an approved work permit if he/she is a minor and has not yet graduated from high school.

Failure to complete these pre-employment requirements in a timely manner will lead to termination from the internship program.


Internship Descriptions

All positions will be paid at a rate of $15.00 per hour. Please review the descriptions below. On the application form, indicate the positions for which you would like to be considered.  Please note that the number and location of positions may change depending on site/program needs. 

Special Project Clerk (Workforce & Benefits Administration)

10 positions available

Locations:  Interns will be assigned to one of 4 locations:

  • Eastmont Self-Sufficiency Center: 6955 Foothill Blvd, Suite 100, Oakland 94605. Nearest BART is Coliseum BART then take AC Transit line 73, or interns may use free County shuttle. Free parking lot on site.
  • Eden Area Multi-Service Center: 24100 Amador St, Hayward 94544. Accessible by Hayward BART. Interns are eligible to use the free County shuttle. Paid lot on site.
  • Enterprise Self-Sufficiency Center: 8477 Enterprise Way, Oakland 94621. Nearest BART is Coliseum BART, then take free County shuttle or AC Transit line 45 plus 0.5 mile walk. Free parking lot on site.
  • Fremont Outstation: 39155 Liberty Street, Suite C330, Fremont 94538. Walk 0.7 miles from Fremont BART or take AC Transit line 200. Free parking on site.

Duties: Interns will help deliver a high standard of service to customers at our Self-Sufficiency Centers. Site needs will vary, but job functions may include assisting customers with utilizing kiosk terminals to submit documents and request benefits cards; helping customers to complete forms through MyBenefits CalWIN website; and referring special accommodation needs to the clerical supervisor. Interns may also support mailroom and clerical operations by stamping, sorting, filing, and distributing mail; maintaining supplies; and providing backup for Index Operators. Additional duties may be assigned depending on site needs.

Desired qualifications: Confidence in interacting with diverse clientele, strong customer service skills, cultural and social sensitivity, and ability to maintain confidentiality. Knowledge of elements of correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and arithmetic. Knowledge of general office practices, equipment, business correspondence. Experience with or ability to learn to use a multi-line telephone system. Ability to perform general clerical work (typing, filing), screen telephone calls, and take accurate messages. Bilingual skills highly desirable.

Scheduling: Dependent upon site needs, interns may be scheduled between 24 to 37.5 hours weekly, between 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Mondays-Fridays. 

Special Project Clerk (Adult & Aging Services: In-Home Supportive Services)

2 positions available

Location: Eastmont Town Center, 6955 Foothill Blvd, Suite 300 (3rd floor), Oakland 94605. Nearest BART is Coliseum BART then take AC Transit line 73, or interns may use free County shuttle. Free parking lot on site.

Duties: Interns will help deliver a high standard of service by greeting customers, assisting them with utilizing kiosk terminals to submit documents and make service requests; helping them apply for programs, supporting orientation groups, and providing general/directional assistance. Additional duties may be assigned depending on site needs.

Desired qualifications: Confidence in interacting with diverse clientele, strong customer service skills, cultural and social sensitivity, and ability to maintain confidentiality. Knowledge of elements of correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and arithmetic. Knowledge of general office practices, equipment, business correspondence. Ability to perform general clerical work. Bilingual skills highly desirable.

Scheduling: 37.5 hours per week, Mondays-Fridays. 8:30 am to 5:00 pm

Summer Lunch Program Assistant (Office of Public Affairs)

  • Thomas L. Berkley Self-Sufficiency Center, 2000 San Pablo Ave, Oakland 94612. 10-minute walk from 19th St. BART and near several AC Transit lines.
  • Youth Uprising (community partner site): 8711 MacArthur Blvd, Oakland 94605. Reachable by Coliseum BART and AC Transit line 98. Free parking lot on site.

Duties: Interns will support operations for the Agency's free summer lunch program for kids, including receiving meal delivery, distributing promotional program materials to waiting room customers, greeting participants, distributing meals, monitoring dining area, cleaning up, and compiling program documentation. Additional duties may be assigned depending on site needs.

Desired qualifications:
Interest in and aptitude for engaging with parents and children. Ability to provide excellent customer service. Interest in food security and nutritional topics a plus. Ability to adhere to detailed food handling and safety procedures. Bilingual skills highly desirable.

Scheduling:
Must be available daily 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Mondays-Fridays at minimum. Additional hours will be scheduled depending on site needs and meal delivery schedules.

Training & Consulting Team (TACT) Clerical Assistant

1 position available

Location: Eden Area Multi-Service Center: 24100 Amador St, Hayward 94544. Accessible by Hayward BART. Interns are eligible to use the free County shuttle. Paid lot on site.

Duties: Maintain, organize, and distribute supplies; maintain upkeep of training rooms (unlock/lock doors, ensure supplies are stocked); process and track IT/office requests; dispose/move old files; copy, file, label, archive and scan confidential documents; data entry; update electronic tracking sheets and work orders; mail retrieval; and other tasks as needed in support of department activities.

Desired qualifications: Intermediate or advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and Word; use of Outlook for email and calendaring; intermediate internet skills; experience using scanners, fax machines, printers and copiers.

Scheduling: 37.5 hours per week, Mondays-Fridays. 8:30 am to 5:00 pm

Facilities Clerical Assistant

1 position available

Location: Thomas L. Berkley Self-Sufficiency Center, 2000 San Pablo Ave, Oakland 94612. 10-minute walk from 19th St. BART and near several AC Transit lines.

Duties: Provide support to Facilities Management staff, including: respond to telephone and email inquiries; assist with processing invoices; utilize database and spreadsheet software to extract data; organize and maintain electronic and paper files; check in visitors to Administration Office; compile data and generate reports; assist with minor routine administrative and operational problems; assist with dissemination of information to other departments; provide high quality service to County employees, representatives of outside agencies and members of the public; and perform related duties as directed.

Desired qualifications: Confidence in interacting with the public, strong customer service skills, cultural and social sensitivity. Knowledge of elements of correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and arithmetic. Knowledge of general office practices, equipment, business correspondence. Experience with or ability to learn to use a multi-line telephone system. Ability to perform general clerical work (typing, filing, data entry), screen telephone calls, and take accurate messages. Familiarity with Internet browsers, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Scheduling: Minimum Mondays-Fridays 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Additional hours to be scheduled based on operational needs.
