Volunteer Opportunities with the SSA Community Ambassadors Program

All prospective Ambassadors must complete the mandatory orientation prior to start of placement. Please rsvp to ssavolunteer@acgov.org if planning to attend.

 

Opportunities for High School Ambassadors (10th-12th grade)

The Clothes Closet

The Clothes Closet welcomes donations of gently used clothing of all sizes for foster children, youth and teens. The Clothes Closet is a critical resource accessed by child welfare workers, foster parents, and other caregivers to meet the immediate needs of youngsters who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect, often with only the clothes on their back. Community Ambassadors are vital to the operations of The Clothes Closet and its ability to provide not only clothing but comfort in a time of great need.  Here's a chance to put your organizational skills and fashion sense to good use!

Location: Hayward

Minimum participation requirements:

  • Age 15 and older (10th grade or higher)
  • 20 hours minimum (to be scheduled on Wednesdays, between 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm).

Opportuntiies for Ambassadors, age 18 and older

North County Self-Sufficiency Center - Waiting Room

At SSA’s North Oakland Self-Sufficiency Center, hundreds of customers pass daily through the doors of the waiting rooms. Customers may be coming into the office for the first time and are unsure of what they are applying for and where they should go. Others may be inquiring about their existing benefits. It is the priority of the Agency to provide responsive, effective, and timely service to all. As a Community Ambassador, you will play a crucial role in helping customers feel welcome and at ease.

Location: (downtown Oakland) 2000 San Pablo Ave, Oakland 94612

Minimum participation requirements:

  • Age 18 and older
  • 1 shift per week (2-4 hours) for 3 months minimum

Eastmont Garden of Hope

The Eastmont Garden of Hope receives and distributes donated clothing, hygiene products, household items, canned goods, and other necessities to SSA clients in urgent need year-round. This program serves as many as 400 households monthly. Whether providing food for a struggling family, a warm coat for a shivering child, or diapers for a desperate mother’s newborn, the Eastmont Garden of Hope seeks to ensure that those in greatest need are served expeditiously and with utmost compassion.

Self-motivated and independent Community Ambassadors are critical to the program's operations and keeping the service area open and available to customers in need throughout the week. Community Ambassadors assist with sorting, preparing, and organizng donations; greeting and helping customers to locate the items they need; and more!

Location: Eastmont Town Center, 6955 Foothill Blvd, Oakland

Minimum participation requirements:

  • Age 18 and older
  • 1 shift per week minimum for 2 to 4 hours (flexible scheduling Mondays-Fridays between the hours of 8:30 am -12:00 pm and 1:00-5:00 pm).

IHSS Provider Enrollment Center

The In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) program provides assistance to those eligible aged, blind, and disabled individuals who, without this care, would be unable to remain safely in their own homes. New homecare workers must attend an IHSS Orientation as part of the hiring process to receive critical information on their role and responsibilities More than a hundred people typically attend these orientations, which are offered once weekly. Community Ambassadors will be on hand to greet, welcome, and usher attendees and provide support to staff to help ensure that the orientations proceed expeditiously.

Location: Eastmont Town Center, 6955 Foothill Blvd, Oakland

Minimum participation requirements:

  • Age 18 and older
  • 1 shift every Thursday (except 1st Thursday of the month) either from 8:45 am - 12:00pm or 1:00-5:00pm, minimum of 3 months.
